Virgin and Child with angel and donor, after Memling, between 1499 and 1509. Creator: Unknown
Virgin and Child with angel and donor, after Memling, between 1499 and 1509. Under a canopy, the Virgin holds the child Jesus on her lap. An angel offers him an apple. On the right is Christiaan de Hondt, abbot of Ter Duinen Abbey, in prayer. This painting is a copy, with changes to the central panel, of the Memling triptych in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The figure of the saint in prayer has been changed to the sponsor of this work. The panel may have been produced in the workshop of Memling, but over-painting indicates a later intervention, probably from the 19th century.
