Valerie Hobson, British actress, c1936-c1939. Valerie Hobson (1917-1998) was a leading lady in the British cinema of the 1930s and 1940s. Among her best known roles were as Estella in David Leans 1946 adaptation of Great Expectations and as Edith d Ascoyne in the 1949 Ealing Comedy Kind Heart and Coronets. She achieved a second, unsought, moment in the spotlight as the wife of John Profumo, the Tory minister at the centre of the Christine Keeler affair in 1963.
