Tudor fort, Sandown, Kent, c1540 (1956). Situated just to the north of Deal, Sandown Castle was one of the chain of Device Forts built by Henry VIII along the English coast to defend against foreign invasion. Together with Deal Nad Walmer Castles, it defended the strategic stretch of the East Kent coast known as the Downs. It was built in 1539-1540.
