Framed Print of Trowel used by the Queen in laying the first stone of the new St. Thomas's Hospital, 1868. Creator: Unknown
Trowel used by the Queen in laying the first stone of the new St. Thomas's Hospital, [in London], 1868. The trowel used by her Majesty [Queen Victoria] was a most artistic and elegant specimen of goldsmith's work, in the pure Italian style. The handle was of rock crystal, inlaid with scrolls of gold and turquoises, and surmounted by the Royal crown in chased gold, set with precious stones, the arched diadems being jewelled with pearls. The blade, which is of silver, bears the inscription: This Trowel was used by her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen in Laying the First Stone of St. Thomas's Hospital. May 13, 1868. The trowel, together with the mallet and the plumb-line, was designed and executed by Messrs. Howell and James. The flowering plants, which formed an agreeable feature of the decorations, were supplied by Messrs. Veitch and Sons, of the Royal Nursery, Chelsea'. From Illustrated London News, 1868.
