Tercentenary Service at the Dutch Church, Austin Friars, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Tercentenary Service at the Dutch Church, Austin Friars, [London], 1850. Scene of the...Commemoration in the Dutch Church at Austin Friars, an edifice of very interesting antiquarian history, and belonging to the house of Augustine Friars founded by Humphrey Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, in the year 1243...Henry VIII. at the Dissolution, bestowed the house and grounds on William Paulet, first Marquis of Winchester; hence Winchester-street adjoining. The Church, reserved by the King, was granted by his son "to the Dutch nation in London, to be their preaching place;" and to the poor Dutch refugees who fled out of the Netherlands, France, and other parts beyond seas, from Papist persecutors." The grant was confirmed by several successive sovereigns, and is enjoyed by the Dutch to this day'. The service was performed by the Rev. Dr. Gehle. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
