The Supreme Courthouse, Wellington, New Zealand, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Supreme Courthouse, Wellington, New Zealand, 1864. 'The Court House, an edifice in the Ionic style, cost about £5000. It contains the resident magistrate's court, and a hall, measuring 50 ft. by 25 ft., in which the Supreme Court holds its Sessions, both of civil and criminal jurisdiction. This Court House was formally opened for public business in September, 1863, by his Honour Mr. Justice Johnston, who is Judge of the provinces both of Wellington and Nelson...The town of Wellington, situated in the fine landlocked harbour of Port Nicholson, upon the northern shore of Cook's Strait, which divides the two main islands of New Zealand from one another, is likely to become a place of much importance. It is not only the capital of a thriving province of the same name, but, while it rivals Auckland as a commercial port, it has some pretensions to supersede that town as the metropolis of the whole colony, for which purpose Wellington has a great advantage by its central position among the several provinces of the north and the middle island'.
