Some Spoils of the Battle-field, (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: The first use of flame-projectors (flammenwerfer) by the Germans was experienced by our [British] troops at the battle of Hooge. Some of these barbarous instruments fell into our hands and some were also captured by the French. Two of these are seen in the illustration.... The first use of a flamethrower in a concerted action was on 30 July 1915 against British trenches at Hooge near Ypres in Belgium.
