Framed Print of Sir Joseph Devereux, Mayor of Windsor, 1883. Creator: Unknown
Sir Joseph Devereux, Mayor of Windsor, 1883. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. G. P. Cartland. This gentleman, the Mayor of Windsor, who was knighted last week by the Queen at Osborne, is the youngest son of the late Mr. Charles Topping Devereux, of Windsor, by his marriage with Mary, second daughter of Mr. John Bill, of Rugeley, Staffordshire, and was born in 1816. In 1836 he succeeded to his father's business at Windsor, and subsequently formed a branch establishment at Eton, in which town he filled several public offices. In 1863 he was elected a member of the Windsor Town Council; he was made a Justice of the Peace in 1867, and he was chosen an Alderman in 1874. He was first elected Mayor of Windsor in 1869, a second time in 1881, and a third time in November last. Sir Joseph Devereux was the founder of the Masonic Hall at Windsor, and was for several years the Provincial Grand Secretary of Berks and Bucks. His family is a younger branch of that of the former Earls of Essex, the present head of that family being Robert Devereux, Viscount Hereford. Sir Joseph Devereux married, in 1843, Louisa, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Robert Bowden, of Manchester'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883.
