Shielding the Helpless: group by the late E. B. Stephens, in the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1883. Among the best works of sculpture in this year's Exhibition of the Royal Academy is this finely-conceived group, of heroic size, by the late Mr. Edward Bowring Stephens, A.R.A....In the noble composition "Shielding the Helpless, " which was the latest work of his hand, a half-naked warrior, of Teutonic or British type, with battle-axe in hand but at rest on the ground, draws to his protecting left side a young person whom he is prepared to defend against the approaching foe. His attitude and the expression of his face are full of manly vigour and resolute courage, while the shrinking timidity of the other figure has a pathetic effect, which gives to the whole group, as we have remarked, quite a dramatic interest. The whole conception is heroic and noble, and its masterly execution is a proof that the sculptor's hand and eye had lost nothing of their powers at the time of his lamented death; which ought certainly to have found him in the highest rank of members of the Royal Academy, if sculpture were properly appreciated by the ruling authorities of that institution'. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
