Framed Print of Seamen's Church, Pootung, Shanghai, 1868. Creator: Unknown
Seamen's Church, Pootung, Shanghai, [China], 1868. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. W. Saunders. The small church at Pootung, Shanghai, was built especially for the use of British seamen coming to that port, from the designs of Mr. Oliver, a member of the Shanghai Municipal Council; the builder was Mr. Lester. The cost (about £1200, with the fittings) was partly defrayed by the subscriptions of seamen. The religious services were formerly held in a floating Bethel. The new building will accommodate 200 persons comfortably. It is constructed of unburnt blue Chinese bricks, with granite bands and windows. There is a little spire, 35 ft. high; and an open roof of rafters and plaster, covered with shingles'. From Illustrated London News, 1868.
