Framed Print of Scullers race for the Championship of the Thames: the finish, 1874. Creator: Unknown. Scullers race for the Championship of the Thames: the finish, 1874. Creator: Unknown

Scullers race for the Championship of the Thames: the finish, 1874. Rowing race in London. Our last weekly chronicle of National Sports contained an account of the match for the Thames Scullers Championship, and a stake of £200 each side, between Joseph Henry Sadler, late of Putney, and Robert Bagnall, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Their race took place on Thursday week, between two and three in the afternoon. As we observed, Sadler won an easy victory, getting a boat's length ahead before they had gone 200 yards, and finishing with an advantage of six lengths. The distance from Putney to Mortlake was done in 24 min. 15 secs. Our Illustration shows the scene at the end of the race, if race it may be called at that period. Sadler, who holds the championship, is thirty-five years of age, and weighs eleven stone. His competitor is a younger man by ten years'. From Illustrated London News, 1874.
