Ruins of Brahmunabad, in Sind, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Ruins of Brahmunabad, in Sind, 1857. Ruined city in what is now Pakistan. The most prominent object is the remains of a high tower of brickwork standing isolated on a large heap of ruins. This may have been the citadel, or one of those circular towers such as are seen in Sind to this day in the forts of Hyderabad and Omercote. The present appearance of the city is a vast mass of ruins, forming irregular mounds or hillocks...with here and there open spaces or squares, evidently the bazaars and market-places. The musjid [mosque] on the left is a modern edifice erected by a faqueer or devotee...Brahmunabad, in the seventh and eighth centuries, is described as a fortified and populous city...It is supposed to have been destroyed by an earthquake about the year A.D. 1020'.
