The "Royal Adelaide", Steam-Ship, on her Passage from Cork to London, 1850. The Royal Adelaide was between 400 and 500 tons burthen, and had two engines of 140-horse power each. She was commanded by Captain John Batty, of Cork...It had blown a heavy gale the night previous, and there was a tremendous sea running. It was probable she struck on the sands about midnight, and everything being swept away, even to her masts, leaves very little doubt of all on board having met with a watery grave...The spot where this wreck took place is one of the most dangerous in the British Channel...Only two bodies have been as yet recovered, and they were picked up in the neighbourhood of the wreck. Neither of the poor fellows appears to have died from drowning. They rather seem to have perished in the water'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
