Framed Print of Down to the river presently came a she-wolf to drink, c1912 (1912). Artist: Ernest Dudley Heath
Down to the river presently came a she-wolf to drink, c1912 (1912). Romulus and Remus were the twin brothers and main characters of Romes foundation myth. Protected by the god Mars, the boys were cared for by a wolf and fed by birds, until a shepherd discovered them. Raised as shepherds the boys protected their community. Upon realising the decadence of their rulers, they restored Numitor to the throne, refusing to take the crown themselves, and set about founding their own city. Romulus was shown favour in a sign by the gods and began building his city, Remus jumped over the city wall in rage at his loss, but was killed by Romulus servant Celer. Romulus completed his city and named it Roma after himself. From The Story of Rome, by Mary MacGregor. [Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd. 1912].
