The Promenade (Landscape with Cypresses), La Promenade (Paysage aux cypres), 1897
The Promenade (Landscape with Cypresses), La Promenade (Paysage aux cypres), 1897. In 1891, Cross adopted a Neo-Impressionist technique and began painting in a pointillist manner influenced by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. In that same year, Cross left Paris and moved to the south of France, settling in Saint-Clair, a small hamlet near Saint-Tropez. There he concentrated on seascapes and scenes of peasants in harmony with the landscape. The sensuous silhouettes of the cypresses and the swaying circle of figures by the waters edge exemplify Crosss decorative treatment of the landscape, also recalling the Japanese colour woodcuts and Art Nouveau designs that inspired other Neo-Impressionists at the time
