Portrait of Soplica, c1841.
The Old Man of Lithuania, also known as the Portrait of Soplica. Inspired by the Memoirs of J. Pan Seweryn Soplica, a Czesnik of Pärnu. A collection of stories by Henryk Rzewuski. The narrator of the noble tales is the fictional protagonist Seweryn Soplica, a czesnik of Pärnu. Soplica is a typical representative of his environment, he is guided by the ethos, worldview and sense of honour typical of the nobility. These values are understood in the tales as guarantors of the world order.
The language of the work is stylized as colloquial speech. The sentences are extensive, in the course of the story there are numerous digressions and the desire to familiarize the reader with the situations and characters discussed as accurately as possible.
Rzewuski's work, although it was created as a pastiche and largely presented a fictional image of old Polish, gained considerable popularity and enthusiasm of the audience. He referred to the longing for lost times and the desire to preserve the memory of ancestors and national traditions.
