Old Palace of Greenwich, in 1630, (c1878). The Palace of Placentia was a palace built on the banks of the Thames at Greenwich by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester in 1447. In 1660 King Charles II engaged John Webb to build a new royal palace on the site but the work never completed. In 1694 the old palace was demolished and Webbs building was incorporated into the Greenwich Hospital. From Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, And Its Places.
