Old Newgate, c1760, (c1872). Newgate Prison in London, established in 1188, was one of the earliest prisons. It was rebuilt several times, and finally demolished in 1904. This view of the prison when it was inside the old city gate, shows Dr Hales machine for the ventilation of prison apartments above the battlements. From Old and New London, Vol. II: A Narrative of Its History, Its People, and Its Places, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. London, Paris & New York]
