The Notts Testimonial to Lord George Bentinck, in the Market-Place, Mansfield, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Notts Testimonial to Lord George Bentinck, in the Market-Place, Mansfield, 1850. Monument designed by T. C. Hine: a richly ornamented Gothic structure, about 50 feet; high, of the style that prevailed in the fourteenth century...The whole is divided into three stages - the base or pedestal; a gabled canopy, supported on pinnacled buttresses and clustered columns; and a lofty spire pierced with traceried and gabled lights, and terminated with a gilded vane. The lower stage consists of a flight of steps...with shields of the armorial bearings of the Portland family...The gables of the canopy are filled with diaper-work, and sculptures emblematic of the interests which Lord George Bentinck so ably advocated. The pinnacles, gables, and spire-lights are throughout enriched with carved crockets...The contract for the building has been undertaken by Mr. Charles Lindley'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
