Framed Print of The new reredos in Exeter Cathedral, 1874. Creator: Unknown

The new reredos in Exeter Cathedral, [Devon], 1874. Reports have lately appeared of the litigation between the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral, on the one hand, and the Bishop of Exeter on the other, upon the legality and propriety of their erection of a new reredos, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, the architect of the cathedral restorations. Our Illustration shows the design of this work of art, which has been executed by Messrs. Farmer and Brindley, sculptors...The summit of the reredos rises to a height of 22 ft. above the floor of the choir, the materials used in its construction consisting of marble and Derbyshire alabaster, with precious stones. The central compartment is occupied by a sculptured group in alabaster representing the Ascension, the figure of the Saviour being 3½ ft. in height. The figure of St. Peter, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, has a prominent position; on each side of the Saviour appear angels. The Transfiguration and the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost are also represented. The reredos occupies about a third of the space at the east end of the choir. The central compartment alone cost £900, and the estimate of £1625 for the whole work will be considerably exceeded'. From Illustrated London News, 1874.
