Framed Print of New lighthouse, Corbiere Rocks, Jersey, 1874. Creator: Unknown
New lighthouse, Corbière Rocks, Jersey, 1874. Engraving of a sketch by Charles W. Law. A lighthouse has been erected on the dangerous rocks known as La Corbière...The light is 135 ft. above the mean sea level, and is visible in clear weather from a distance of nineteen miles. Provision has been made for illuminating two dangerous patches of submerged recks, close to the coast, with a red light, so that the mariner may have due warning that he is approaching the dangerous shoals. In foggy weather a bell will be rung by automatic machinery at half-minute intervals. The illuminating apparatus consists of one of Messrs. Chance's dioptric lenses, of the type usually supplied by them to the Trinity Board...The lighthouse was formally handed over to the Jersey authorities by the engineer-in-chief, Sir John Coode, and the resident engineer, Mr. Imrie Bell...The expeditious performance of this work is due, in great part, to the use of concrete as the material for the tower. It is the first, but assuredly will not be the last, work of its kind executed in this excellent constructive material... the light will be hailed by mariners, warning them away from one of the most dangerous spots round the island of Jersey'.
