Framed Print of The new judge, Mr. Justice Denman, 1872. Creator: Unknown

The new judge, Mr. Justice Denman, 1872. He took his Bachelor's degree...as Senior Classic, in the Classical Tripos list. He was also captain of the poll. As the son of a peer, he was exempted from the general rule then in force, which made a place in the Mathematical Tripos a necessary qualification for competing for classical honours. He proceeded M.A. in 1845; was called to the Bar, at Lincoln's Inn, in 1846, and went the Home Circuit; in addition to his circuit practice he has held for some years the office of auditor of his former college. In 1857 he was appointed one of the University counsel. He was first elected member for Tiverton, as Lord Palmerston's colleague, in the Liberal interest, in May, 1859, and has represented the borough since that time, with the exception of a very brief interval in 1865-6, when he was out of Parliament, being defeated by Mr. Walrond. Mr. Denman has lately been appointed one of the new governing body of the Charterhouse School. He has also shown that, in spite of his legal pursuits, he can find time to cultivate his old classical tastes by publishing a translation of Gray's Elegy into Greek elegiac verse. He is known to rowing men as a great patron of the University boat-race'. From Illustrated London News, 1872.
