New Church of St. John the Evangelist, at Great Stanmore, [north London], 1850. The foundation-stone was laid [in 1849] by the Earl of Aberdeen (whose son, the Hon. and Rev. Douglas Gordon, is rector of the parish)...The style of architecture throughout is decorated Gothic...The architect is H. Clutton, Esq...The site and adjoining field was given by Lieutenant-Colonel Hamilton Tovey Tennent...After the [consecration] ceremony luncheon was provided at the rectory under a spacious marquee, for the clergy and other distinguished visitors...A dinner was also given in the Priory park to 500 poor people, by the Marquis of Abercorn'.
