Myles Birket Foster, late 19th century. Portrait of British painter Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899). At the age of sixteen, Birket Foster became an apprentice for Mr Landells who was a well known wood engraver. After his apprenticeship he turned to illustration, and in the 1840s he illustrated several childrens books, and was an illustrator for the " Illustrated London News". In 1860 he became a member of the Watercolour Society. He also exhibited several oil paintings at the Royal Academy between 1869-1877. In 1876 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Berlin.
