Mustafa I, Ottoman Emperor, (1808). Artist: John Young
Mustafa I, Ottoman Emperor, (1808). Mustafa (1591-1639) became Sultan in 1617. Suffering from mental illness or disability he was merely a puppet of powerful courtiers and was deposed in 1618 and replaced by his nephew, Osman II. The Janissaries assassinated Osman and restored Mustafa to the throne in 1622, but he was again deposed the following year by Osmans brother, Murad IV. Mustafa spent the rest of his life in prison.
