Mr. Lusk's Shrieval Badge and Chain, 1860. Creator: Unknown
Mr. Lusk's Shrieval Badge and Chain, 1860. The badge [of Sheriff of London] consists of massive Elizabethan scrolls in standard gold. In the centre is a Saxon shield, on which are the arms of London and Middlesex impaled, beautifully emblazoned in proper colours in enamel. On each side of this shield are, mounted in relief, the civic sword and mace. On the top are the arms of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle-makers, the guild to which Mr. Lusk belongs, and at the bottom are his own arms, with the motto, "Laus Deo, " surmounted by his crest, an antique ship, in a circular solid gold medallion, all choice specimens of enamelling. The designer has appropriately introduced the leaves and acorns of the venerable oak, typical of England's greatness. The chain is formed of the "wheat-ear" link, equally illustrative of her industry. It is gracefully arranged in three festoons, and its whole length is 18 feet. The badge and chain were designed and executed by Mr. John Poole, chronometer-maker, of Fenchurch-street'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860
