Aiming to reform Impressionism by bringing order and structure to the study of nature, he created tightly integrated compositions of merging, intersecting planes. Here, a rising tree branch echoes the distant mountain slope, thereby relating foreground to background. Sensations of space are created through rhythmic patterns of warm and cool colour
