Mormons on the trek from Illinois to Utah, 1846 (1853)
Mormons on the trek from Illinois to Utah, 1846 (1853). The Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830. Smith was murdered by a mob in Illinois in 1844, after which Brigham Young led the Mormons on an 1100-mile journey to Utah. Here they are shown on the gruelling winter trek across the great plains between the Missouri and the Rockies to found Salt Lake City, Utah. From Illustration. ( Paris, 1853)
