Monument of the Rev. Thomas Guthrie, D.D. 1874. The memorial tablet...in the lobby of St. John's Free Church, Edinburgh, has been arranged as a mural monument. Above a plinth...rises a Gothic design of plain but elegant outline, inclosing a panel, from which the head and shoulders...stand out in high relief. From the apex...droop branches of palm and olive, while the mouldings surrounding the panel are enriched with a band of forget-me-nots. In reproducing the well-remembered head of the champion of ragged schools, Mr. Brodie, the sculptor, had before him, in addition to recent photographs, a fine bust executed by his own hand some ten or twelve years ago, and exhibited at the time in the Royal Scottish Academy. Admirable as that bust was, Mr. Brodie has fully equalled, if not excelled, the likeness in his present work. The characteristic expression of the man - his air of mild benignity and buoyant enthusiasm - is cleverly caught; nor has the artist omitted, by the adjustment - or rather want of adjustment - of the clerical bands and necktie, to suggest Dr. Guthrie's easy carelessness of gait and habit. The work, executed in white marble, forms a worthy memorial of one whose name Edinburgh and Scotland will long continue to cherish'. From Illustrated London News, 1874. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
