Memorial to the late Marquess of Londonderry, in course of erection on Scrabo Hill...Ireland, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Memorial to the late Marquess of Londonderry, in course of erection on Scrabo Hill, County Down, Ireland, 1857. Folly in Scottish baronial style, in memory of Charles Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. The monument, a tower in the style of a Scottish chateau, will be 135 feet high, and is to be built of the rough rubble-stone (basalt) found on the top of the hill...The spot selected for the site of the tower is the loftiest point of Scrabo, and is upwards of 500 feet above the level of Lough Strangford...The tower, as well as forming a striking object from most parts the country, will also be of some utility, as affording accommodation for a custodian...'.
