Members of Scott's expedition to the South Pole, 1912. From left to right, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Robert Falcon Scott, Edward Wilson, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans. Scott and his team reached the South Pole on 18 January 1912, only to find that Amundsen had got there 35 days earlier.
