Framed Print of The Loss of the North German Lloyd steam-ship "Elbe": some of the survivors, 1895. Creator: Walter Boughton

The Loss of the North German Lloyd steam-ship "Elbe": some of the survivors, 1895. C. A. Hofmann. W. B. Bothen. B. S. Bradbeer (Vice-Consul). John Vevora. Eugen Sehlegel...the Elbe came into collision...off Lowestoft with another steamer, and in twenty minutes foundered. The Elbe had only left Bremen on the previous day for Southampton and New York, and carried 199 passengers and a crew of 149, most of the souls on board being of German nationality...There were only twenty survivors from this terrible disaster...There was a heavy sea at the time, and one of the boats was quickly swamped. Each of the other two was filled directly, amid great excitement, with twenty persons, but only one boat survived the storm. This was picked up by a Lowestoft smack, the Wildflower, and reached Lowestoft safely in the afternoon. No tidings have come to hand concerning the fate of the other boat... The German Consul at Lowestoft conveyed them to the Sailors Home and the Suffolk Hotel, where they were carefully tended after their frightful experiences. Their stories were very thrilling.
