Framed Print of Lord Lonsdale's Travels in North America: Oxford House, between Norway House and York Factory, 1890. Creator: Unknown
Lord Lonsdale's Travels in North America: Oxford House, between Norway House and York Factory, 1890. The enterprising and courageous performance of the Earl of Lonsdale in...crossing Alaska westward to the North Pacific...has excited much attention...Our Illustrations, from photographs given to Lord Lonsdale by Colonel Gilder, show the kind of sledges, with dog-teams, commonly used in that country, and the Indians in attendance, dressed in clothing of blankets or leather, with fur caps and broad belts, about seven feet long, supplied by the Hudson Bay Company. York Factory, on the west coast of Hudson Bay, was not visited by Lord Lonsdale, but it is represented in our Illustrations to show the ordinary style of construction of the Company's forts or stations...Norway House, near the northern extremity of Lake Winnipeg...is the depot of supplies for the interior north-western region...The Hudson Bay Company has the reputation of dealing liberally with those in its employment, and wisely and humanely with the Indian tribes from whom, as well as from numerous half-breed trappers and adventurous French Canadians, it gets its yearly supplies of valuable peltry [ie animal skins and furs]'.
