Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander, M.P. for South Ayrshire, 1874. Engraving from a photograph by Hills and Saunders. Lieutenant-Colonel Claud Alexander, of Ballochmyle, Ayrshire, returned in the Conservative interest for the southern division of that county, is eldest son of the late Mr. Boyd Alexander, of Ballochmyle; his mother was Sophia Elizabeth, third daughter of the late Sir Benjamin Hobhouse, and half-sister of John, late Lord Broughton, G.C.B. better known by his former name of Sir John Cam Hobhouse. He was born in the year 1831, and was educated at Eton, and at Christ Church, Oxford. He is a magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant for the counties of Ayr and Renfrew, and a Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel in the Grenadier Guards, with which regiment he served through the Crimean War. Colonel Alexander, who now enters Parliament for the first time, was an unsuccessful candidate for the same constituency at the general election of November, 1888. He married, in 1863, Eliza, only daughter of the late Mr. Alexander Speirs, of Elderslie, some time Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire'. From Illustrated London News, 1874. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
