Framed Print of The late Mr. James Odams, 1881. Creator: Unknown

The late Mr. James Odams, 1881. Engraving from a photograph by Samuel Walker. This gentleman, who died lately, in his sixty-sixth year, at his residence near Bishop's Stortford, Herts, took an active interest in matters relating to agriculture. About 1866, when the cattle murrain or rinderpest had been brought to this country, he, at his sole cost and risk, provided, on ten acres of land on the river Thames near the Victoria Dock [in London], a wharf and landing-stage, lairs for resting the cattle, a place for marketing, and slaughterhouses. He tendered these to the Privy Council, with the result that an order was issued, and all foreign animals were landed, marketed, and slaughtered at this spot. Mr. Odams was a member of the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society, the Smithfield Club, the Central Chamber of Agriculture, the Central Farmers Club, and the Farmers Alliance. He was also a member of the French Peasants Seed Fund Committee, formed under the presidency of Lord Vernon at the termination of the Franco-German War, and undertook the chartering and forwarding of the steam-vessels employed in the conveyance of consignments to different French ports'.
