Framed Print of The late Madame Parepa-Rosa, 1874. Creator: Unknown
The late Madame Parepa-Rosa, 1874. It was in 1855 that the young Euphrosyne Parepa [an accomplished vocalist] made her debut, at Malta, as Amina, in La Sonnambula'...The first success of the young singer was followed by her appearance in grand opera at Naples, Genoa, Rome, Florence, Madrid, and Lisbon, her reception having been everywhere of the most brilliant kind. Her voice was a genuine soprano, of extensive compass and fine quality, while her highly- cultivated execution and her general musical knowledge gave her exceptional advantages, both mechanical and intellectual; among her many attainments having been a perfect acquaintance with several languages, in each of which she could sing with equal facility. Madame Parepa's first stage appearance in this country was in 1857, as Elvira, in I Puritani, at the Lyceum Theatre...Madame Papapa...[married] Herr Carl Rosa, the eminent violinist. A second, and also successful, American tour was followed by their recent return to this country, and the formation of Herr Rosa's English opera company...[A proposed] production of...Wagner's Lohengrin, with the important feature of Madame Parepa-Rosa's appearance as the heroine, Elsa...[was] sadly frustrated by [her] premature death'.
