The late M. Jules Paul Moulin, Frnech Consul at Salonica, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The late M. Jules Paul Moulin, Frnech Consul at Salonica, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Abdullah Brothers of Constantinople, of a diplomat murdered in the Salonika Incident. A young Orthodox Christian woman attempted to convert to Islam to marry a Turk against the will of her family. She was detained by the US Consul at Thessaloniki, and an enraged mob attempted to retrieve her. French consul Moulin and his brother-in-law the German consul Henry Abbott were murdered when the mob failed to find the woman. They fell upon their unarmed victims, and butchered them with various instruments in such a manner that no one can behold their mutilated bodies without feelings of horror and loathing for the instigators and perpetrators of such a savage massacre'. A diplomatic backlash ensued, leading to displays of force and to reforms in the Ottoman Empire. From "Illustrated London News", 1876
