Johnny King, British boxer, 1938
Johnny King, British boxer, 1938. Johnny King (1912-1963) fought a remarkable 225 times at flyweight and later, bantamweight, winning 149 times with 49 losses and 14 draws. In 1932 he beat Dick Corbett on points to claim the British and British Empire bantamweight titles. The following year he lost a world title bout against Panama Al Brown on points. In 1934 King fought Corbett twice more for the British and Empire bantamweight belts, losing the first fight and drawing the second, but regained the by then vacant British title in 1935 with a points win over Len Hampston. He failed in an attempt to win the British featherweight championship in 1936, but made successful defences of his bantamweight title in 1937 and 1938. The belt remained in Kings possession until 1947, when he was knocked out by Jackie Paterson in what would be his last fight. A Churchmans Cigarettes picture card
