John Howard (1726-1790), 1883. Howard, English philanthropist and prison reformer, visiting a prison during his investigation of prison conditions. In 1775 he embarked on a tour of prisons in Britain and Europe. He undertook further tours in 1781 and 1782. A result of his work was A Report of the Prisons of England and Wales.... and an Account of some Foreign Prisons by John Howard. (London, 1777)
