[A] fine public park has recently been presented to the town of Newcastle-on-Tyne by Sir William Armstrong, the eminent engineer and inventor of military ordnance...Jesmond Dene, an old manor, has some picturesque features of natural scenery, with a "burn" or brook running through it, the banks of which are steep and overhung with trees and shrubs, and the art of the landscape-gardener has been employed to improve the effect. Sir William has also...constructed an iron bridge...which will be a great public convenience. The Park...will afford much enjoyment to the increasing population of that great and busy town, being distant not more than a mile and a half from the abode of toil and traffic. it is satisfactory to observe that the social welfare of the townspeople, especially of the working classes, has become the object of much attention...Our Illustrations are from sketches by Mr. W. Connell, of Gateshead'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector/Heritage Images
