Jean-Baptiste Colbert, (1933). Creator: Unknown
Jean-Baptiste Colbert, (1933). Portrait of French statesman Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), Louis XIVs Chief Minister. He was responsible for reforming the chaotic financial administration and taxation system of France and oversaw the modernisation and expansion of manufacturing industry. His success in managing the French economy was particularly notable given the kings penchant for spending the nations wealth on wars and luxury. Colbert was also instrumental in the development of France as a naval power. After a miniature by Robert Vouquer. From " Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]
