Jean-Baptiste Charcot, French explorer, 1910. Charcot (1867-1936) commanded the French Antarctic Expeditions of 1904-1907 and 1908-1910. Le later switched his attention to the Arctic, but was killed in 1936 when his ship, the Pourquoi-Pas? was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Iceland.
