Interior of the Lantern, Lansdown Tower, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Interior of the Lantern, Lansdown Tower, 1845. Interior of an architectural folly built for British art collector William Beckford near Bath, Somerset. It was designed by Henry Goodridge. The house and contents were auctioned after Beckfords death in 1844....a portion of the room within the Lantern: the latter...is copied from the Choragic Monument of Lyncrates, at Athens. The windows of the Lantern are of plate glass, moving in perpendicular grooves; the wind, at this height, being exceedingly violent, great strength of material is necessary. The curtains of the room are crimson; and, in Mr. Beckfords life time, warm air from below was conveyed by heated tubes to the Lantern, that the damp might not be injurious to the wood-work.
