An Incident in the Battles of the Meuse, (1919). Scene from the First World War, 1914-1919: The region between the Meuse and the upper courses of the Aisne [rivers], forming a plateau of wooded hills referred to in dispatches as the " Argonne", was a difficult country from a military point of view, and was the scene of desperate and stubborn battles. Villages in this region frequently passed alternately from French to German hands. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. III, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight.
