Framed Print of Highgate Archway, to be demolished, 1898. Creator: Unknown
Highgate Archway, to be demolished, 1898. Highgate Hill [in north London] has long remained a sort of fortress for those who object to the invasion of the villa. If there is one thing the Londoner dislikes more than another it is inaccessibility. Thus the slopes of the hill only have been covered with houses. The summit remains select. This, indeed, was much more true ere Archway Road was made, and the famous bridge thrown across it eighty-six years ago. The first proposal was to tunnel the hill right through to the flatter Finchley; but the bridge was finally settled on. Its construction, thirty-six feet above the road, was regarded as an engineering feat of the first importance. The bridge, which was built of stone, was eighteen feet wide, the foundation stone having been laid in October 1812. But 1898 has found the structure, marvellous as it may have been in its day, inadequate, and thus it is that the new bridge was decided on by the County Council'.
