Herd of Rein-Deer, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Herd of Rein-Deer, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, [London], 1850. Although the Rein-deer is rendered more completely subservient to the wants of man in Lapland than in any other country, its range extends throughout the whole northern regions of Europe, Asia, and America...The Rein-deer varies in colour from a dark slaty grey to white, according to the season and the limits of its northern range: its feet are remarkably extended, and the hoofs of great breadth and roundness; this structure, combined with the great strength of the fetlocks, gives great firmness to its tread upon the yielding snow. The muzzle, instead of being bare, as in the other deer, is almost entirely covered with hair; and horns are produced by the female as well as by the male'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
