The Goodwood Cup, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Goodwood Cup, 1845. Racing trophy awarded at Goodwood in Sussex:a very characteristic prize for a race-course; illustrating, as it does, an event of great interest in the annals of racing, viz. the presentation by Charles the Second of the first Gold Cup ever run or at Newmarket. Charles, it will be remembered, was the first to abolish the now obsolete custom - Paisley excepted - of running for a pair of bells. The King is on horseback, and giving the cup to the fortunate jockey. This compliment to the Princely originator of the Goodwood meeting, by the personation of his Royal ancestor in the design, is in excellent taste. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII
