There Was A Hand-To-Hand Struggle, 1902. In the aftermath of their victory at the Battle of Isandlwana, the Zulus mounted an attack on the British border post at Rorke's Drift. It was held by just 145 men and after ten hours of fighting the much larger Zulu force was driven off. 11 of the defenders were awarded the Victoria Cross for their part in the action. Pair of Zulu earrings, South Africa, 1940s or 1950s. Made from coloured pieces of linoleum attached to a wooden disc. Such earrings were made by migrant Zulu men working in South African industries during the 1940s and 50s. They were worn by both men and women inserted in extended holes in the earlobe.
