Gulliver is thanked by the emperor of Lilliput after capturing the Blefuscudians' ships, lantern slide, late 19th century. 'The emperor and his whole court stood on the shore...This great prince received me at my landing with all possible encomiums, and created me a nardac upon the spot, which is the highest title of honour among them'. A scene from "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift, first published in 1726. 'Acte III Scene VI - 50 mille Autrichiens...Oh le beau coup de filet', 1805, (1921). Roughly translated as '50 thousand Austrians, what a lovely haul!', French cavalry officers celebrate the capture of enemy soldiers, who they have taken prisoner in ten days - 'faits prisonniers en dix jours'. The Battle of Ulm, 16-19 October 1805, allowed Napoleon I to trap an entire Austrian army under the command of Karl Freiherr Mack von Leiberich, and to force its surrender near Ulm in Germany. 'Lord Roberts' State Entry into Bloemfontein', 1900. British Field Marshal Lord Roberts (1832-1914) and his troops entered Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. Scene from the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) fought in what is now South Africa, between Great Britain and the independent Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (known as as the Transvaal by the British).
