'They presented him with gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh', mid-late 19th century. Biblical scene, from Matthew 2: 11: 'And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh'. 'Adoration of the Magi', c1745, (1928). Pen with wash on paper. Collection of the Kupferstichkabinett der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, Germany. Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), worked not only in Italy, but also in Germany and Spain. He was commissioned to carry out frescoes in churches and palaces, and was elected President of the Academy of Padua. As well as his large-scale majestic works, he also produced etchings and oil paintings, and is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of the period.
